Majestic provides financial support through college scholarships to 12 members of the local communities around the Santa Elena operation. Last year, the company also provided schools with much-needed sports equipment. La Encantada Silver Mine Ocampo, Muzquiz, Coahuila Job creation and economic impact – La Encantada's operation generates 732 direct jobs and is the largest employer in the region. The accumulated annual economic impact (direct and indirect) in La Encantada is estimated at 60 million dollars. Access to water – The area of influence around the La Encantada mine is frequently affected by drought seasons, which requires water management and access programs for the communities. In 2020, the company supported ejidos and community members to build and improve the capacity of water tanks.
This effort included the purchase of equipment to increase water collection and reduce evaporation losses. Road construction and maintenance – In 2020, the Company supported ejidos and community members through its road maintenance program focused on two objectives: reducing traffic accidents and reducing costs for local farmers and residents. The program included the installation of Anhui Mobile Number List traffic signals and other road infrastructure to reduce collisions between livestock and wildlife. Education and sports for the youngest members of the community – First Majestic provides financial support to local programs focused on preventing and reducing dropout rates, especially at the primary and secondary levels. The company annually donates sports equipment, clothing and toys to children from economically vulnerable families.
Innovation with purpose – Reducing the Environmental Footprint The La Encantada mine was successfully converted to a diesel to liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) mine over five years ago, which has significantly reduced its carbon footprint. This effort has continued at the Company's Santa Elena operation, which is currently being converted from diesel to natural gas. In the last year, the construction of the 12.4 MW LNG power plant in Santa Elena has been one of the company's main objectives. This new power plant will substantially reduce costs and represents First Majestic's continued efforts to reduce the environmental impact of mining in Mexico. All First Majestic-owned operations are in full compliance with environmental regulations and permits. First Majestic uses only dry stack tailings disposal and storage systems in all of its operations, compared to more traditional wet tailings dams.
